The AS9100 Rev D Standard Explained

AS9100D & BS EN ISO 9001:2015 Certificate

The AS9100 standard is an integral part of the Quality Management System governing organisations involved in the aviation, defence and space industry.

Produced by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), it sets guidelines for the QMS by defining industry-accepted practices and requirements.

Updated in 2016; the AS9100 Rev D standard is the latest version of the legislation.

Developed from the requirements set down by the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, AS9100 reassures aviation, space and defence organisations that their certified suppliers meet the relevant industry standards.

New Rev D standards

The AS9100 Rev D standard has additional clauses and requirements on top of those set out in ISO 9001. This makes it easy for suppliers to transition to AS9100 with the appropriate guidance.

It is essential to the many organisations, businesses and suppliers looking to participate in the aerospace industry.

The newest version of AS9100 Rev D puts increased emphasis on any risks involved during operational processes, considering the human factors relating to management and corrective action.

It reinforces the need for organisations to be aware of each individual’s contribution to the quality and safety of the products and services.

In addition, improved configuration management clauses better serve stakeholders’ requirements, while other new clauses put the spotlight on preventing counterfeit parts.

The standard is important to the aerospace sector due to the advanced and complex electronics in aerospace engineering.

Sellectronics AS9100D certification

Sellectronics has achieved AS9100D certification and BS EN ISO 9001:2015 certification after further developing our PCB assembly services in line with the latest standard.

We did this by forming an AS9100 implementation team, led by our Director of Compliance, Mark Trebilcock, in January 2023, to further develop and implement systems and processes to comply with the AS9100 Rev D standard.

We successfully completed our stage one audit in May and our stage two audit in September. Finally, on 15th November 2023, following a technical review of the audit report, we were proud to receive our certification.

Sellectronics looks forward to many more years of working in the aerospace and defence industry after receiving this important testament to our hard work and dedication.

Benefits of having AS9100

There are many benefits to having AS9100, as it improves a company’s reputation, giving stakeholders greater confidence and winning a competitive advantage.

It reassures the company’s management and workforce, as well as stakeholders, that high quality is at the heart of the business.

Leading to greater profitability, rework costs are reduced, and productivity improves. Any defects are caught earlier and consequently can be corrected at a lower cost.

The standard also creates a greater awareness and engagement among employees of the business’s procedures.

The AS9100 standard is recognised internationally, after first being released in 1999, based on the ISO 9001:1994 standard.

The Rev A version was released in 2001 and contained various updates. The Rev B version was launched in 2004 and Rev C in 2009.

In achieving the standard, aerospace suppliers, such as Sellectronics, can prove to customers that we are taking the necessary steps to meet industry-specific requirements, while also further improving the quality of our products.
